Lake Louise Fall Adventure Itinerary

Amp up the adventure this fall in the heart of the Canadian Rockies.

The best part about September in Banff National Park? All of the incredible summer experiences are open and ready for you to explore throughout the beginning of the fall season! Lake Louise is just a little quieter than it is in the peak summer months, giving you all the space you need to adventure here. Our perfect 5-day Lake Louise fall itinerary is designed for the adventurous at heart—whether you’re hiking, horseback riding, or taking in the golden larches.

What to Expect During Fall in Lake Louise
In early fall (September), you can expect cool mornings with temperatures ranging from 5°C (41°F) to 15°C (59°F) during the day. By mid-October, it gets chillier, with daytime highs around 10°C (50°F). Snow may begin to dust the higher elevations, adding to the beauty of the changing leaves. Be sure to pack layers, as mountain weather can be unpredictable. Warm jackets, hats, and gloves are essential, especially for those sunrise hikes!

What to Pack for Fall Adventures in Lake Louise
Pack for comfort and functionality! Here are some essentials:

  • Hiking boots: The trails may have some snow or ice by mid-October, so waterproof, sturdy footwear is a must.
  • Layers: Temperatures can fluctuate drastically throughout the day, so bring base layers, fleece jackets, and a windproof, waterproof outer layer.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses: Even in cooler weather, the sun is intense at high elevations.
  • Reusable water bottle: Staying hydrated at altitude is key to enjoying your adventure to the fullest.

Day 1: Arrival

How to Get to Lake Louise
Getting to Lake Louise is an easy and scenic journey, especially in fall. If you’re flying, the nearest airport is Calgary International Airport, approximately a two-hour drive. From there, you can rent a car, or opt for one of the many shuttle services available. Don’t forget to plan your trip early to ensure you’re well prepared for the winding, yet breathtaking mountain roads.

As you arrive at Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, the sweeping views of the vibrant fall landscape and turquoise waters immediately welcome you to your mountain adventure. After checking in, settle in for a peaceful evening with a sunset hike up to Fairview Lookout. The shorter days cast a golden light over the lake and surrounding peaks, creating an unforgettable introduction to the beauty of the season. Round off your first evening with a cozy dinner at Fairview Bar & Restaurant, where local ingredients meet refined mountain cuisine.

Day 2: A Fall Adventure

Start your day with the crisp morning air of the Rockies. After a hearty breakfast, saddle up for a trail ride to the iconic Lake Agnes Tea House with Brewster Adventures. A cup of hot tea and a sweet treat at Lake Agnes Tea House is an experience you can’t miss when visiting! Built in 1901 by the Canadian Pacific Railway, this historic and rustic cabin served as a refuge for hikers and continues to be a popular spot for those hiking or riding up to this breathtaking alpine lake. The ride up covers a distance of roughly 3.5 km (2.2 miles) with an elevation gain of 400 meters (1,300 feet). As you ascend on horseback, the golden hues of the larch trees begin to appear, blending with the evergreens, while the cooler temperatures make for a refreshing ride.

Afterward, head to the Lake Louise Ski Resort & Summer Gondola. The ride up offers breathtaking views of the changing landscape that surrounds you. Enjoy a leisurely lunch at Whitehorn Bistro, surrounded by panoramic mountain views.

Day 3: Explore the Larches

Fuel the day ahead with breakfast at Louiza to prepare for an unforgettable guided hike to Sentinel Pass. Led by a Mountain Adventure Guide, you’ll embark on a jaw-dropping trek through vibrant larch forests. Adventure enthusiasts near and far flock to the Canadian Rockies during larch season when the landscape transforms into a gold canvas, only lasting a few weeks. The changing colors, contrasted against the rugged mountain terrain, create a picturesque journey that feels like stepping into a postcard. This short-lived but stunning spectacle is a “bucket list” natural wonder that shouldn’t be missed by those eager to witness it.

After a day spent in nature, unwind at the iconic Lakeview Lounge & Patio, where you can savor a hand-crafted cocktail prepared by our talented mixologists. Enjoy a deliciously curated three-course meal inspired by alpine cuisine and local ingredients, all while taking in the breathtaking mountain views of Lake Louise and Victoria Glacier.

Day 4: Adventure Beyond Lake Louise

Today, you’ll venture further into Yoho National Park, where the quieter fall season makes these natural wonders feel even more serene. Witness one of Yoho’s largest alpine lakes, Emerald Lake is famous for its striking turquoise-green waters. On your drive to Emerald Lake, stop at the historic Spiral Tunnels; an engineering marvel built in the 1900’s to reduce the steep grades of the Canadian Pacific Railway through Kicking Horse Pass. To round out your road trip in Yoho, make a visit to the breathtaking Takakkaw Falls, among the highest and most dramatic waterfalls in all of Canada.

For lunch, indulge in local flavors at Truffle Pigs, a hidden gem nearby Field, BC. The beauty of fall is truly in the air as you explore more of the Canadian Rockies’ most peaceful sights.

Day 5: Moraine Lake + Departure

Before you depart, take one last opportunity to immerse yourself in nature. Grab a packed lunch from The Guide’s Pantry, then hop on the guest-only shuttle to Moraine Lake.  This iconic spot is a must-see before the road closes for the winter season! Grab your cameras because these views will have your jaw dropping (literally). The dramatic mountain backdrop, paired with the golden hues of the season, provides a serene setting to enjoy a delicious lunch, by the pristine waters of an alpine lake—a perfect ending to your fall adventure.
